When oil or gas wells are in the drilling phase or when any workover operations of a well are being performed, zinc bromide solutions are used to help displacing the drilled mud. The extremely dense brine solution gives the zinc bromide fluid its weight of SG 2.3 which makes it useful in holding back flammable oil and gas particles in high pressure well conditions. However, the brine solution becomes very acidic and thus extra care is needed when using zinc bromide as it can lead to corrosion.

Application
Zinc Bromide 70% clear brine, by itself or with other bromide or chloride salts, is used in oil and gas well completions and workover operations. It is primarily used where high density (up to 21 lb/ US gallon) is required and/or when other multivalent ion will cause precipitation of Carbonates and/or Sulphate salts thus impairing oil/gas production. All personnel handling this material must handle it as an industrial chemical, wearing protective equipment and observing the precautions as described in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
Packaging and Storage
Zinc Bromide Solution – Packed in 200 Litre Steel Drum, 4 drums per pallets.
Store in dry, well-ventilated area. Keep container closed. Keep away from heat, sparks and flames. Store away from incompatibles. Follow safe warehousing practices regarding palletizing, banding, shrink-wrapping and /or stacking.
